Mission

To introduce engineering concepts to students, and entice them to pursue a post-secondary education in science, technology, and engineering. Our ultimate goal is to see those students return as mentors to FIRST, and contribute their education, experience, and innovation to future FIRST members.

About the Team

Our robotics team is more than just a handful of students getting together to build robots. We have managed to form a family comprised of Galena Park High School (GPHS) students, teachers, and GE Energy engineers. Together, we are able to gather our best ideas and see them come to life. Building robots is not just something we do; it’s what we live for.

We take on the challenge to design and build a robot for three competitions throughout the year; FIRST, VEX, and BEST. Our goal is to provide students with not only a fun school activity, but with an unforgettable experience that can broaden their views for their future and offer them an introduction to career opportunities such as engineering, technology, and media. Through out the year we face team challenges that in the end, bring us closer together.

While working hard to construct robots and build a team, we receive help from our mentors, dedicated engineers, family, and supportive community. We believe that together, we can create what may seem impossible. It is with their help, that we see ourselves as winners no matter the outcome. This inspires the students to continue to strive in all aspects of robotics and take on progressively challenging projects.

How it all began

Team KAOS originated in Galena Park, Texas, a small city located on the outskirts of Houston. The team was started by former head mentor, David Scarcella in 2003 with the hopes to enrich the lives of young aspiring minds. Sure to leave a positive imprint, he left his former job with Friendswood High School in order to grant students with opportunities and an education they had not been introduced to before. The initial team consisted of only ten students. Since then, there has been a positive trend in the number of students in the program, with the largest group of 50 members joining in the fall of 2010.

Our Name: Team KAOS

‘Team KAOS’ defines our organization. We are a group of people who manage to turn complete chaos into something far from that. We love our name, regardless of the fact that it describes us as something we’re not; or at least something we are not anymore. :) In fact, that name was adopted after competing at our very first robotics competition. Attending by the name of ‘Galena Park’ we never knew what the future with held from that point forward. When our robot was under inspection, the volunteer looking at our robot said “You guys are a mess! Pure chaos!” It truly was horrible! Nevertheless, ever since then, we adopted the name and added our own twist, changing the ‘ch’ to a ‘k’. Hence, KAOS. BRING ON THE KAOS!

Diversity and Culture

Although Team KAOS is primarily Hispanic oriented, our members derive from different parts of the world. Each one of them exemplifies unique qualities that are special to the team and to other members, finding ways to extract great values in everyone. Their personality gives other members inspiration to succeed. The team believes that with these qualities, teams can triumph and motivate their members to exceed their goals. We do not discriminate against any person. The team is composed of a broad array of individuals who all possess unique qualities that are valuable to the team. From freshman to senior, male to female, and one ethnicity to the next, Team KAOS believes that every student has the right to receive the same opportunity to grow and succeed.

Having Fun

Team KAOS truly believes that if the the team is not having fun while trying to achieve a task, something must be wrong. The team strives to ensure that all team members enjoy robotics, from building at the shop or playing at a competition; we want our students to enjoy this unforgettable experience. However, with fun comes responsibilities, the team recognizes that in order to have fun, we need to maintain a safe work environment. Students’ safety and health are the team’s first priority. That set aside… Build Robots! Make Friends! And most importantly, HAVE FUN!

More than A Team; A Family

Throughout the years, the team has evolved into something greater: a family. Team KAOS accepts new members with every coming year and continues to grow bigger. We have engineered a relationship between mentors, engineers, and members, that allows us to care for one another in gracious ways. The team serves as a liaison between strangers and best friends, destroying barriers and allowing members to get to know each other. Although we have built special friendships, all members maintain respect for each other, as it is crucial for a smoothly functioning team.
