Team KAOS Robotics Summer Camp

Summer Camp Kickoff

With the help of GPISD Career and Technology Education and GE Energy, Team KAOS successfully kicked off the first annual: Team KAOS Robotics Summer Camp. Overall, the camp was declared a success and exceeded all expectations.

About the Camp

The Team KAOS Robotics Summer Camp is a one-week camp available to elementary and intermediate Galena Park Independent School District students. Students receive the opportunity to explore the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), and ultimately, robotics. Along the way, participants gain confidence and create friendships with others bound by the same interests. The camp is led by Team KAOS members, mentors, and GE Engineers. In addition, students receive free camp t-shirts, lunch everyday at noon, and the best part: the camp is completely free!

Planting the Seed

Team KAOS believes that by creating a summer camp targeted for students at the elementary and intermediate school level, the team is planting the STEM education seed on students whose lives are about to take direction. Students who are being exposed to different career fields early on are more likely to have chosen a career path at the time of graduation. Whether the students are fully interested in STEM and surrounding fields, or even paths on a different side of the spectrum, it is good to stimulate their perceptions and broaden their views. Ultimately, that offers them the ability to begin thinking about the decisions that they will start making in the near future.

Knowledge Gain

On average, students lose about 2.6 months worth of knowledge during the summer. A summer camp helps solve this problem by subliminally engaging students in math and science concepts while having fun. By building robots, students have to use mathematical applications to measure distances and angles used during autonomous game play. The students are also exposed to the force of gravity and how it can affect their robots. In the end, it is a win-win situation, we re-instill lost knowledge onto the children and they have fun building robots.

Fun and Unforgettable Experience

There is one thing that students will surely remember after this camp: the friendships. The students are encouraged to socialize and become friends while working as a team. Allowing them to listen to others’ opinions provides them with the opportunity to embrace different perceptions regarding applicable solutions. Just as Dean Kamen stated:

It’s not just about robots... It’s about building self-confidence, respect and important relationships with people who invent new technologies to make a better future.–Dean Kamen, FIRST Founder

Activities

Although the summer camp is designed to teach students about robotics, they also gain knowledge and are exposed to other information. Three out of the five days that the students participate in the camp, they complete activities that stimulate their mind. In example, students were given airplane activities that got them thinking about the forces of gravity, wind, weight, and pressure. They were also exposed to how communication is key in order to achieve different applications.

Summer 2011 Turnout

The first annual iteration of the Team KAOS Robotics summer camp was declared a success. The team was challenged with the task of planning the entire event and allocating participants in only three weeks. In total, approximately 45 elementary and middle school students participate overall. We anticipate to continue this program for the Summer of 2012. The respective dates are still to be determined. The students had a lot of fun and also evaluated the program as a success. In fact, one of the students that attended the camp (Astrid Cavazos ) is now on the official KAOS robotics team as a high school freshman. Surely, Team KAOS is sending students off into the right path!
